Sosie(so-zee) is an interesting name, a French word that translates into doppelganger or twin. The winery is aptly named as owners Scott MacFiggen and Regina Bustamante are French wine and food lovers. Together they are determined to make wines inspired by some of their favorite wine regions; the Loire, Rhone and Burgundy. Their numerous travels throughout France have inspired their vineyard practices and the way they treat the fruit in the cellar, making old-world-style wines with minimal intervention. Sosie is fairly new for Sonoma, with their first wines released in 2015.
The “French Soul” is their inspiration for their name and their label. The label is a union of French and California traditions. The California Bear that is prominent on the state flag along with a French Rooster is featured on the label. Scott and Regina are devoted to producing old-world wines in Sonoma. Their wines have a pure expression of fruit, bright acidity, lower alcohol and are extremely food-friendly.
Sosie Sparkling Red Wine, “A Moment Of Weakness” VIVIO VINEYARD – BENNETT VALLEY 2018 (SRP $35)
A unique and exceptional sparkling red, this is a Method Champenoise Sparkling Syrah. I was super excited to try this wine as it combines my two favorite things, bubbles and Syrah. This is one of those wines that I know I will try to keep stocked in my fridge at all times. It is insanely good and pairs with so many dishes. Its bright acidity and savory finish make it a great pairing with pizza, pasta, chili, burgers or cheese. It is so versatile, that it will become your go-to wine. This is unique, rare and fun bubbly.
Most of us drink the common white wine varieties when it comes to sparkling wine, but I encourage you to try this red sparkler. The nose has aromas of cardamon, black cherries, blueberries and raspberries. It is fresh, creamy, and bubbly on the palate. Dark and sexy, this sparkling wine will bring a sense of fun and joy to any experience.
Sosie Cavedale Vineyards Moon Mountain Red Blend 2017 (SRP $45)
The Moon Mountain Red Blend is a Bordeaux-inspired wine. Coming from the Cavedale Vineyards in Sonoma’s Moon Mountain AVA, this is a true mountain wine. The vineyards are optimally cool at an elevation of 2000 feet. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (45%), Merlot (45%) and Cabernet Franc (10%), the vines are grown on volcanic soils that have free-flowing bay breezes. The three grape varieties are harvested on the same day and vinified separately. They are cold-soaked, followed by natural fermentation. The wines are left on skins for maceration, with 36 days of skin contact and are aged separately for 21 months in 50% new French oak. Then a final blending is determined.
Beautiful aromas of blackberries, black cherries, vanilla and spices emerge from the glass. The palate opens with notes of blueberries, cranberries, dark chocolate, sage and cedar. The wine is fresh, elegant and complex. The firm tannins are approachable and the finish is long and memorable. This is mountain fruit at its best.
Sosie wines are incredibly interesting and made in small production, where every detail in the winemaking process is meticulously attended to.
