If there is one wine region in the world that everyone knows, it is Bordeaux. Bordeaux is home to some of the most illustrious Châteaux producing some of the highest quality wines in the world. Many wine drinkers know the prestigious five first growths of Bordeaux, but think the wines are out of reach in terms of price and need to be cellared for decades. This may be the case for many Bordeaux wines, but one of the first growths, Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite), has created a line of wines that are affordable and approachable. Légende wines are made with the same care and attention to detail as is applied to their Grands Vins.
The Légende Wine Series was first introduced in the 90s, featuring a Bordeaux Blanc, Bordeaux Rouge, Saint-Émilion, Médoc, and Pauillac. Légende offers quality wines from the main terroirs of Bordeaux at affordable prices. The wines are a balance of traditional and modern elements of Bordeaux. They are the perfect expression of terroir from the most renowned wine region in the world.
The name Lafite & Baron Rothschild are legendary names in Bordeaux. Even if you are not a Bordeaux drinker, you are sure to know the name, the brand and the quality of this esteemed Chateau. There was a strong demand for quality Bordeaux wines at reasonable prices with history and legend, hence the name. Légende wines are an introduction to the Bordeaux region with wines that are approachable and affordable.
Légende Winemaker – Diane Flamand
Recently I had the opportunity to taste Légende wines with winemaker Diane Flamand. A Bordeaux native, Diane started her professional career working harvest at Chateau Lafite in 1984. Diane says that this training was influential in her decision to become an oenologist. 30 years later she returned to Domaines Barons de Rothschild as Légende’s winemaker. Diane says, “Légende offers consumers affordable, approachable and easy-drinking wines.”
Légende wines are made to be enjoyed young, they are approachable and easy drinking with soft tannins. The wines are made with the same philosophy as Chateau Lafite wines. Diane says, “All Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) wines must have three qualities: finesse, elegance and balance. You will find these qualities in all of the wines they produce worldwide.”
Légende Wine Tasting With Diane Flamand
Légende Bordeaux Blanc 2019 – $19
The Légende Bordeaux Blanc is produced in Entre-Deux-Mers. The vineyard rests on the hillsides located between the two rivers South East of Bordeaux: the Dordogne and the Garonne. Made with 85% Sauvignon Blanc and 15% Sémillon, the wine has nice freshness and acidity. It is crisp on the palate with nice texture and weight. A blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon is classic in Bordeaux.
In Bordeaux, they drink dry Bordeaux Blanc as an aperitif but also perfect with seafood and oysters. A beautiful wine to always have in your fridge.
Légende Bordeaux Rouge 2017 – $19
The Bordeaux Rouge is also produced in Entre-Deux-Mers with a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot. Diane explains that they use more Cabernet Sauvignon because it is the iconic grape of Chateau Lafite. The wine has nice body and the tannins are round and soft. There is good structure and is very well balanced. The wine is meant to be enjoyed three-four years following harvest. Wonderful notes of coffee and mocha with round tannins. There is elegance, balance, finesse and freshness.
Wine easily pairs with food and is easy to enjoy, making it a great daily wine. Drink alone as an aperitif or pair with a juicy hamburger.
Légende Saint-Émilion 2016 – $40
A classic right bank. Saint-Émilion wine with a blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc. The Right Bank is primarily dedicated to Merlot, at Légende, they want to respect the appellation. As with the other wines, this too has a nice balance of elegance, finesse and balance. There are jammy aromas along with vanilla and sweet spice. On the palate, the tannins are round, soft and silky with lots of volume and a long finish. The wine is made to drink now, but the quality of the appellation will allow you to keep it in the cellar for some time.
The Légende Saint Emillion is ideal when paired with a traditional Bordeaux meal of roasted duck. It can also pair with pasta and pizzas too.
Légende Médoc 2016 – $26
Coming from the Left Bank in Médoc, this wine has a high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon. A classic blend of this appellation the wine is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot. There is more body, more tannins, more structure, and more spicy notes(black pepper) in this Médoc. The nose is expressive, with candied licorice, cherries, mocha, vanilla, and cocoa powder. You can drink now but can keep up to five+ years.
The perfect pairing for steaks, lamb chops, grilled meats and mature cheeses.
Légende Pauillac 2016 – $54
The Légende Pauillac partially comes from their two estates Chateau Lafite and Château Duhart-Milon with 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Merlot. The wine is approachable but is also a classic Paulliac wine. The nose is complex and elegant, with tobacco and earthy notes. There is a nice structure, good tannins, and classic peppery notes. The Paulliac is the most complex of the five wines tasted.
This wine can be enjoyed now or cellared for another 5 to 7 years. Delectable when paired with grilled lamb, roast beef, steak pies and aged Parmesan cheese.
The Légende wines are serious wines, and for the price, they offer great value. Like many Bordeaux wines, Légende wines are exceptional when paired with food
