While there’s a lot of uncertainty about trick or treating this year, including what to do with all your leftover Halloween candy, we feel certain quite a few of us are planning to mastermind this outcome! Consider pairing your favorite Halloween treats with Sherry.
According to recent studies, Halloween candy consumption is not just reserved for October 31, and just for kids. Hershey, for example, reported that people buying treats to eat themselves make up nearly 50% of Halloween candy sales. Those purchases begin well before the holiday, with the other half of the season’s sales occurring in the last two weeks of October.
Halloween for many adults is basically an excuse to purchase and stockpile candy… and one of the best things about being an adult is that you can enjoy an adult beverage while you’re eating it. Pairing wine with candy is a tricky matter. So to make the most of the occasion we’ve taken the trick out of the equation and paired our favorite sherry wines with Halloween treats.
Harveys Bristol Cream + Twix
This Cream Sherry is the number one selling Sherry in the world. A unique blend of four different styles; Oloroso, PX, Fino and Amontillado. On the nose delicate, fruity, fresh and aromatic with notes of raisins and hints of caramel. On the palate smooth, creamy and elegant highlighting the fruitiness of the PX and the evolved vinosity of the Oloroso. The caramel and ultra-silky chocolate crunch of a Twix bar is a match made in heaven with the smooth creamy caramel profile of Harveys Bristol Cream.
González Byass Alfonso Oloroso + Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups
Alfonso is a delicious, dry Oloroso with a deep mahogany color, warm spicy aromas and pronounced nutty flavors. A rich, smooth wine with a long, lingering finish.
Thanks in part to the Alfonso Oloroso’s nutty flavors, the perfect partner for this sherry would be the deliciously nutty and creamy Reeses Peanut Butter Cups. The savory flavor profile of Reeses Peanut Butter Cups complements the pecan and toasty notes of this classic Oloroso. Chocolate and peanut butter are a match made in heaven, but it is even more exciting when paired with Oloroso.
González Byass Nectar Pedro Ximénez + Snickers
Nectar is a young Pedro Ximénez showing rich aromas of fresh fruit such as raisins and hints of honey, caramel, pecans and fruit preserve. This is the most opulent and sweetest of the sherries. On the palate, it is velvety and smooth with good acidity which alleviates the sweetness.
This sherry is a decadent treat and pairs easily with the wildly popular Halloween treat, Snickers. The nougat, caramel, nuts, and chocolate pair deliciously with this Pedro Ximénez. The sweetness of the Sherry is balanced with the savory profile of caramel and peanuts of a classic all American Halloween treat. There are no tricks here, it is all treats.
