Donnafugata – Changing The Landscape Of Sicilian Wines

January 7, 2020

Donnafugata Rallo Family
Donnafugata Wines – Rallo Family

In recent years the interest and excitement for Sicilian wines have been on the rise. That wasn’t always the case as Sicily has had a history of producing bulk wines. Over the last 30 years, the landscape has changed dramatically, winemakers have emphasized unique sites and terroir that has resulted in a dramatic shift in the wines that are produced today.  In recent years, winemakers have shifted their focus to producing high-quality wines, placing emphasis on terroir and cultivating more indigenous grape varieties.  The Rallo family of Donnafugata wines is at the forefront of this change, bringing positive and impressionable change to the region. Their passion has changed the perception of Sicilian wines around the globe.

Winemaking in Sicily dates back to 1500 BC when the Greeks settled in Sicily, but it was not until recent history that Sicily made its mark on the wine map.  In 1773, John Woodhouse began producing one of Sicily’s most beloved products, Marsala wine.  Sicily continued to produce bulk wine and its reputation in the wine world was gravely impacted.  That landscape has changed, thanks to visionaries like Gabriella & Giacomo Rallo.

Gabriella and Giacomo Rallo realized the enormous potential of Sicilian wines and the demand for local autochthonous grape varieties.  They also had a passion for preserving and promoting unique terroirs of Sicily. The Rallo family has helped change the image and quality of Sicilian wines. With an elevated quality of wines, a focus on unique terroirs, and emphasis on autochthonous grape varieties, the Rallo’s have helped attract a new generation of winemakers in Sicily. These winemakers are lifting the quality of wines coming from Sicily. Today Donnafugata is crafting some of the finest wines from Sicily. These are magical wines that are garnering wide acclaim and praise.

Donnafugata Sicily Map

History of Background of Donnafugata Wines

The history of Donnafugata starts in Marsala with Giacomo and Gabriella Rallo.  The Rallo family had been producing Marsala wine since 1851.  In 1983 Giacomo and  Gabriella decided to change the family focus to high-quality table wines. They created an artistic label and a new style of Sicilian wines.  Gabriella had inherited vineyards in Contessa Entellina(western Sicily).  These vineyards were exceptional terroir for grape growing. In 1987 they made Vigna de Gabri, a Cru wine that was a passion project for Gabriella.  It was a Cru made from the ancient grape variety Ansonica.

In subsequent years the family built a winery near their vineyards in Contessa Entellina.  Marsala remained their headquarters for refining and bottling.  They first produced three wines under Donnafugata(White, Red, Rose), because at the time, Sicily’s name and reputation were not established and Sicily was not known for quality wines.  Slowly they introduced international grapes, like Chardonnay, because  Insolia and Ansonica were not recognized outside of Sicily.

The passion of the Rallo family led them to expand and buy vineyards in Vittoria, on the island of Pantelleria, and the rugged slopes of Mount Etna. In 1990 brother and sister José and Antonio joined Giacomo and Gabriella in producing Sicilian wines of elegances and finesse. I had the opportunity to spend a few days with Antonio and José.  It was widely apparent that the passion of their parents(Gabriella & Giacomo) has been passed down to the next generation, whose vision and dedication remain – to elevated the wines of Sicily.

Donnafugata Name And Labels

Gabriella Rallo wanted her wines to have more personality and character than the other wines that were being sold on the market.  She had the vision to call their company Donnafugata.  A name that means “donna in fuga” (woman in flight) and refers to the story of a queen who found refuge in the part of Sicily where the company’s vineyards are now located.  The name Donnafugata takes its inspiration from the literary masterpiece, The Leopard by Tomasi di Lampedusa. The setting of the book is Contessa Entellina where their winery was located.  The author was from a noble family and spent a lot of time on the estate named Donnafugata. The Leopard was a book set in revolutionary times, and so Gabriella thought Donnafugata was a significant name for Sicilian wines and significant for the history and future of Sicilian wines. For Gabriella, the name Donnafugata was symbolic of breaking with the past and creating something new, while elevating the quality of Sicilian winemaking.

Many interpret the meaning of Donnafugata to be more personal and symbolic to Gabriella Rallo.  Gabriella was an english teacher.  She decided to quit because she wanted to be an active part of the vineyards and winemaking.  Gabriella had a green thumb and spent a lot of time in the vineyards.  Having traveled the world, she was introduced to incredible wines, which made it very natural for her to lead the men in the vineyards and fields. This was quite unusual for Sicily at the time, to have a woman in the fields, leading men. Donnfugata is Gabriella Rallo, the fleeing woman, symbolizing Gabriella fleeing from traditional work, and putting the pants on to work in the fields to produce Sicily’s finest wines.

Gabriella was a pioneer and a brave woman who had an artistic vision for Donnafgata.  She took inspiration from art, music, wine, and literature to create names and labels for Donnafuagata wines.  For example, Sedara is the family name in the book The Leopard and Tancredi is the nephew of the Prince in the book.  Tancredi was an aristocrat with revolutionary ideas, hence the wine Tancredi is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon with Nero d’Avola(a revolutionary blend for Sicilian wines at the time).  The wine is elegant and aristocratic like Tancredi, but also strong and masculine. Gabriella’s symbolic names for her wines resonated with wine lovers.  The labels are works of art designed by Stefano Vitale, who is an exceptional artist that captures the personality of each wine.

What Sicily Has To Offer – Expressed Through Donnafugata Wines

During my visit with Donnafugata, we toured Mount Etna and Pantelleria, experiencing first hand the diversity of landscapes, climates, grapes, and terroir. Donnafugata cultivates its vineyards in many unique, diverse, heroic and extreme terroirs.  The focus is on producing the best grapes possible.

In Contessa Entellina they cultivate the autochthonous grapes, Ansonica, Catarratto, Grillo, Nero d’Avola as well as international varieties. Zibibbo reigns King on Pantelleria with Carricante and Nerello Mascalese on Etna.  They cultivate Frapatto and Nero d’Avola in Vittoria.  The DOC’s span Sicilia, Contessa Entellina, Pantelleria, Etna, and Frapatto di Vittoria. They also represent wines from the only DOCG in Sicily, Cerasuolo di Vittoria.

The following tasting was a sampling of what Sicily has to offer as expressed through the passions and dedication of Donnafugata wines.

Donnafugata Sicily Wine Tasting

SurSur Grillo 2018  is 100% Grillo from Contessa Entellina on the west coast of the island.  Grillo is indigenous to Sicily and is a crossing between Zibbibo(from Pantelleria) and Catarratto, which is also indigenous to Sicily. Grillo is made in various styles throughout Sicily.  SurSur is made in stainless steel, so the wine is light, fresh, fruity and savory. It is elegant and clean with fresh grassy notes.  SurSur is Arab for cricket, like the variety name, Grillo also means cricket, hence the cricket on the label.

Donnafugata SurSur Grillo

Sul Volcano Etna Bianco 2017 comes from the eastern side of the island on the north-facing side of Etna.  It is made with an indigenous ancient white grape, Carricante. This wine is manually harvested with a careful selection that is aged partially in tanks and partly in French oak for 10 months and then spends 9 months in bottle.  It is an elegant wine that is complex with white floral aromatics.  Exuding elegance and minerality, the wine is fresh and savory.  There is a remarkable minerality that is distinct to Etna.

Donnafugata Sul Vulcano Etna Bianco

Chiarandà 2016  is a Chardonnay made on the southwest side of the island from Contessa Entellina DOC.  The Chardonnay comes from clay soils that give the wine structure and power but also nice elegance and bright acidity.  The wine is clean and elegant with herbs, spice, and hazelnuts.  It has a beautifully long mineral finish with a savory quality.  The Chiarandà has nice aging potential.

Donnafugata Chiaranda

Sherazada 2018  is an elegant and fruity Nero d’Avola from the west coast of Sicily from Contessa Entellina.  This is a light fresh wine for easy drinking.  Notes of cherry, fruits, and spice fill the mouth. With nice acidity, the wine is fresh for informal drinking with pasta and pizza.  The wine demonstrates that Nero d’Avola can be fresh and light. I particularly fell in love with the label on this wine.  Sherazade is a fascinating female protagonist of the Arabian Nights.  The label is intensely Mediterranean in lust Donnafugata style.

Donnafugata Sherazade

Floramundi  2017 is from Cerasuolo di Vittoria, the first and oldest DOCG in Sicily.  It is a grape from two indigenous varieties, Nero d’Avola and Frapatto.  Nero d’Avola is famous all over Sicily but Frapatto is from the southern part of Sicily in Vittoria.  The wine is friendly, fruity and drinkable, yet it had a nice complexity.  The Nero d’Avola gives the wine structure while the Frapatto gives the wine elegance.  There is prominent red fruit and cherry on the front,  followed by green pepper, cinnamon, and sweet white flowers. This wine is ideally served slightly chilled. The Floramundi is made with traditional grapes of Sicily but in a very modern style.

Donnafugata Floramundi Cerasuolo di Vittoria

Fragore Etna 2016  is produced on the eastern coast of Sicily from Nerello Mascalese.  The wine is distinct compared to the other Sicilian wines we tasted during this tasting.  This wine has extraordinary complexity due to the volcanic soils on which the grapes are grown. The sulfur in the soils gives the wines a distinct style. This is a cru made solely from Contrada Montelaguardia and 2016 is the first vintage of these wines. The wine is elegant with soft tannins. It is savory, elegant, and full of intense minerality.  There is nice structure and complexity.  Notes of orange zest and spice linger on the palate.  Fragore can be aged and will show beautifully for the next 5-7 years.

Donnafugata Fragore Etna Rosso

Mille e una Notte 2015 is a wine that Giacomo Rallo wanted to be the flagship wine for not just Sicily, but all of Italy. The wine was designed to be the benchmark of all Nero d’Avola from Sicily.  Giacomo wanted this wine to be an ambassador for quality Sicilian wines.  It is a complex wine that will change every time you try. The wine has intense notes of sour cherries, dark plum, and chocolate.  It is rich, complex, and ever-changing in the glass. The style is a focus on elegance and bright acidity.  It is not just a powerful wine that fills your mouth, but there is a lot of finesse and complexity.  The name Mille e una Notte is influenced by the Arabs, a dedication to the cross-culture of Sicily.

Donnafugata Mille e una Notte

Ben Ryé 2010 is a refined Passito made with 100% Zibibbo from the island of Pantelleria.  We tasted this wine over dinner, immediately following our formal sit down master tasting. This wine rounded out the portfolio of Donnafugata wines. Ben Ryé is one of the greatest and most beloved sweet wines of the world, loved by Sommeliers and wine lovers from around the globe. The 2010 has a deep amber hue, showing signs of the 10 years spent in the bottle.   On the nose, there is an intense and brilliant bouquet of apricot, pear, orange and spicy notes which continue onto the palate with beautiful freshness and intense fruit.  There is a wonderful long seductive finish.

What pairs with a traditional Spanish Tapas and Pa What pairs with a traditional Spanish Tapas and Paella?? Killer Spanish wines!! Monteabellon wines from Ribera Del Duero are fantastic.

All the grapes used to make these Ribera wines come from their own vineyards. Currently Bodegas y Viñedos Monteabellón has 175 HECTARES OF ITS OWN VINEYARDS spread over different plots. The different altitudes and diversity of the soils in our vineyards are a reflection of the quality of our wines.

All the wines were incredible, made of the highest quality. My favorite was Matambres. But you have to try them all. Monteabellón Finca Matambres is the purest expression of Tempranillo. Matambres is delicious with its expressive aroma, and a palate with black fruits, balsamic notes notes and liquorice.

Chianti Classico was dream. 🍷🍷@chianticlassi Chianti Classico was dream. 🍷🍷@chianticlassico

It is Tuscany’s oldest and most genuine region. Often overshadowed by its neighbors, don’t underestimate the wines of Chianti Classico. Wines produced in this region have high standards and regulations. The region is deeply committed to sustainability. Over dinner, Giovani Manetti of Fontodi, and President of the Consorzio Of Chianti Classico, said that, “today close to 90% of vineyards in Chianti Classico are using organic growing methods”.

The region has a quality pyramid that helps you understand the quality of the wine in the bottle. The base of the pyramid is Chianti Classico Annata, these wines are aged for a minimum of 12 months. Next is Chianti Classico Riserva. These wines require an additional 12 months of aging, three months of which must take place in bottle. At the top are Gran Selezione. These wines are the highest quality. The wines are aged for minimum 30 months and the fruit comes from a single vineyard.

Ohhhhh Vin Santo!! The best Vin Santos come from C Ohhhhh Vin Santo!! The best Vin Santos come from Chianti Classico. @chianticlassico

Vin Santo has been an important part of Tuscan wine history since the Middle Ages. There are many theories about the origin of its name. A legend from Siena tells of a friar who in 1348 cured the sick with the wine normally used by the brothers to celebrate mass. Word spread that this was a miraculous wine, leading to the name “santo” or “holy”.

Volpaia @castellodivolpaia uses the same labor-intensive process that was used hundreds of years ago to produce its Vinsanto. The winery picks the best bunches of Trebbiano and Malvasia to go into the Vinsanto. The grapes are taken to the winery’s vinsantaia (pictured in the reel) a special attic where the bunches are hung from chains tied to the rafters and dried.

Resulting in a Vin Santo that has intense rich flavors of cane sugar, figs, apricot jam and grapes. It is absolutely delicious, warm and luscious with an almond finish. Perfect with traditional almond biscotti. Now whether to dunk or not to dunk the biscottis is still up for debate.

Magical first day in Chianti Classico at the Castl Magical first day in Chianti Classico at the Castle of Brolio with Baron Francesco Ricasoli.

Such a beautiful property, so picturesque. One of the most historic and oldest castle/winery in Tuscany is Ricasoli. Ricasoli is the first name in Chianti Classico making wines since 1141.

We spent the day with Baron Francesco Ricasoli(32nd generation Baron of Brolio and great-great-grandson of Bettino Ricasoli), who is at the helm of this legendary winery. More to come on him and this incredible property in the heart of Chianti Classico.

Today is International Grenache Day!! I have two o Today is International Grenache Day!! I have two of the finest examples of Grenache.

Grenache, also known as Garnacha, is one of the most widely planted grape varieties in the world, and is known for its aromas of strawberry, black cherry, raspberry and cinnamon, with occasional notes of tobacco, anise and citrus rind. Grenache tends to be medium-bodied and higher in alcohol and pairs well with spicy foods, grilled meats, hearty stews, and vegetables.

The great examples of Grenache that you must try are from DO Campo di Borja, Spain – the birthplace of Garnacha – and the Barossa Valley, Australia. Though made in different styles, old world and new world, and originating from different terroirs, these wines succeed in capturing the essence of the grape, while also expressing what is unique about each region.

BODEGAS BORSAO Tres Picos 2019 is the flagship wine of Bodegas Borsao and is considered a benchmark of the Campo Do Borja style. Named after the three majestic peaks of the Moncayo Massif in the Aragon region of Spain, Tres Picos was the first 100% Garnacha wine born on Spanish soil. The wine opens with aromas of ripe red fruit with floral nuances. Well-structured and rich, Tres Picos evokes flavors of blackberry, plum, and hints of leather and vanilla, with soft, silky tannins.

YALUMBA Samuel’s Collection Bush Vine Grenache 2020 is named after Yalumba founder, Samuel Smith, and this Bush Vine Grenache is a unique style that incorporates a number of special, old bush Grenache vineyards. A range of terroir, including climate and soil types, can be found at each site, helping to make this intriguing style of Grenache one that captures the richness and concentration of Barossa Valley fruit. The fragrance is saturated with brooding plum red fruits, dark cherries and perfumed berries. This is a defined wine showing the richness and concentration of the vintage. The palate is richly textured, fleshy, round and supple, with a red juiciness that merges into velvety tannins.

Happy Grenache Day!! Be sure to grab your bottles to celebrate. 🍷🍷

This Chardonnay will turn anyone into a Chardonnay lover with its understated personality. It is everything you want in a Chardonnay. Weekend vibes with @dutchercrossing summer release Weekend vibes with @dutchercrossing summer release.

The warm temperatures and long days gets me back to my favorite pass time, chilling in my hammock with a great glass of wine and watching the sunset.

One of my favorite wineries, Dutcher Crossing celebrates 15 years. When in Sonoma, you must visit the winery. It sits on 35 acres in the Dry Creek Valley with spectacular views and warm hospitality. Winemaker Nick Briggs has a great lineup this summer with award winning, small lot wines that are true to the vineyard, vintage and variety.

Here are two you must try this summer. Their first ever Riesling is fabulous. The 2021 Winemakers’ Cellar Riesling is just my style. Floral with notes of lemon, lime and honeysuckle. It has a crsip finish that has an intentional “off-dry”sweetness, which balances the wine. Yummy!! Pair with flavorful Thai or spicy Indian inspired cuisine.

The 2021 Winemakers’ Cellar Rosé of Grenache is what summers are made of. It is delcious with notes of raspberries, peaches, lemons and strawberries. Love the fresh fruit and texture of the wine. It will pair beautifully with summer fare like hummus with flatbread, soft cheeses, grilled shrimp and pesto pasta.

These wines will make all your summer celebrations more special!! Cheers to an endless summer with great wines from Dutcher Crossing.

References in the archives of Montefalco, the beautiful hill town in Umbria, has document that place the presence of the Bea family in this locality as early as 1500. This tiny estate is the classic Italian fattoria, producing wine, raising farm animals for trade and home consumption and working the land to produce olives, fruits and vegetables.

To this day, the Bea family raises and produces much of what they consume on a daily basis. Ths family philosophy is : that “nature should be observed, listened to and integrated, not dominated. Wine is not made by man but generated by nature! ... " Paolo Bea, the senior member of the family and a bit of an icon, is the guiding force behind the production of this series of intense and idiosyncratic wines. His two sons assist him. Giuseppe, who farms the vineyards, and Giampiero, who assists in the vinification and is responsible for all commercial aspects of the winery.

This is a gem of a wine made from pure Sagrantino, harvested exclusively from the younger vines in the “Crus” of Pagliaro and Cerrete. A product of a 35-day maceration, it carries a deep ruby robe and a dense, juicy mouthfeel. The round and smooth tannins make for a gentle, playful (but substantial) wine.

We are right in the thick of the summer season. So We are right in the thick of the summer season. Some of my favorite summer wines are Txakoli wines of northern Spain’s Basque region. Txakoli (CHOCK-oh-lee) wines are as unique as the Basque language and culture they come from: slightly effervescent, bone-dry, with brilliant acidity and salinity from the maritime climate. #AD

This summer drink Txakoli ➕ drink better with @oleobrigado

Olé & Obrigado represents a well curated collection of the finest wines crafted by family owned wineries in Spain and Portugal. With "Drink Better by Olé & Obrigado", they will offer special edition mixed cases every month and donate 10% of the proceeds to a non-profit organization. It's not a wine club though: you join a mailing list for free, and when you receive the monthly email you can decide if you want to buy or not, no commitments. For now, it will be available in NY and surrounding parts of CT/NJ only.

Every month Olé & Obrigado will offer special edition mixed cases and donate 10% of the proceeds to a non-profit organization. This month the featured non profit is Billion Oyster Project that was founded in 2014 by Murray Fisher and Pete Malinowski, who envisioned a healthy, biodiverse New York Harbor and aim to restore oysters in one of the busiest ports in the United States.

Try their most recent pack that allows you to compare and contrast two distinct regions: Getariako Txakolina (Gaintza) and Bizkaiko Txakolina (Berroia). Gaintza is a small winery making a “coastal fishing village” style of Txakoli with more pronounced salinity, citrus flavors, and light effervescence. Berroia is located in a national forest in the mountains, and shows a slightly rounder palate with stone fruit flavors and bit more weight.

There is something fun and festive about Txakoli from the Basque region. I had a blast trying the theatrical Txakoli high pour. Try it with friends and family. Pouring high from the bottle into a low glass. Fun way to get everyone excited about these wines.

Delish and ideal wines for the summer season. Grab your packs today by clicking on the link in my profile. ⬆️⬆️

Winding down the last few weeks of the summer with Winding down the last few weeks of the summer with a delicious Chardonnay. Do you have a favorite bottle? Let me know. One of my favorites is @smith_madrone

This Chardonnay will turn anyone into a Chardonnay lover with its understated personality. It is everything you want in a Chardonnay. The wine is subtle at first but then exuberantly opens up with sensational aromatics of apple, lemon, apricot and brioche. There is nice zippy acidity, structure and balance on the palate. There is a refined elegance on the mouthfeel with a purity that lasts through the finish.
