Center Of Effort – COE
The Center Of Effort estate in the Edna Valley was originally The Lawrence Family Winery which dates back to 1978. Jim Lawerence was the first winegrower to establish roots in Edna Valley, a pioneer of sorts for the Edna Valley. In 2008 Bill Swanson(retired CEO of Raytheon) established the Center of Effort. Bill and his wife Cheryl adored Burgundian style wines, so naturally, Edna Valley was the perfect fit.
Through acquisitions of neighboring vineyards, the estate has grown to 100 acres. The estate vineyards are south facing and are just 4.5 miles from the Pacific coast. The climatic conditions are ideal for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. In the mornings a cool fog rolls in and the afternoon brings in coastal breezes. The soils are unique for the area with rocky and sandy soils, which allow for limited vigor and low yields. The combination of climate and soil delivers exceptional wines that exude a sense of place. Center of Effort utilizes sustainable farming practices and is SIP(Sustainability in Practice) certified.
Nathan Carlson – Winemaker
A talented and dedicated team run the Center Of Effort with winemaker Nathan Carlson at the helm. Nathan handcrafts exceptional wines, honoring the natural characters of their fruit. The wines are authentic in their expression of the terroir. All their fruit is estate grown and hand-picked. He utilizes native fermentation and natural yeasts which add a layer of complexity and sense of place to the wines.
2015 CHARDONNAY, CENTER OF EFFORT – Edna Valley AVA
Fresh & pure, with notes of orange peel, spiced baked apple, clove, and star anise. The palate reinforces the fresh character, with bright, precise acidity leading through almond and tangerine fruit. Hard-spice notes of cardamom pod and nutmeg persist into the long, rich finish. Delicious today, but built to age gracefully under proper cellar conditions well into the future.
